Software Testing Experience Part 1
The interview room was full. There were about six people sitting opposite me and that made me a bit nervous. Luckily, I was not desperate for a new job; I already held a nice job and I was there only to seek better opportunity. Those interviewing me are idiots; I deliberately thought so as to calm my nerves.
I wore a shirt, trousers and shoes. No tie. I did not want to look desperate. However, I did wear my famous smile. I did intend to please them and give all the other interviewees a tough competition. "So, tell us about yourself," was the hackneyed first question. I had not rehearsed the answer to this question but told them straight away about myself; taking at least about five minutes and touching on ‘quality’ and ‘technology’ here and there. Example: "I watch the ‘Click Online’ program on TV and am fascinated by new technologies" with an extra emphasis on the word ‘fascinated’. Of course, I did not make things up but just highlighted those things about me that ‘they’ wanted to hear about.
Then followed the usual Software Testing Questions: What is the difference between quality assurance and quality control? What is a test case? How do you define a bug? Blah blah blah. In most interviews it is not what you answer but how you answer that matters the most. And how is that? Interviewers are looking to see how pleasing yet confident you are and not how smart you are. That does not mean they will hire a dumbo but a person with a good attitude has a better chance than a smart-aleck. I happen to be the former, with a little bit of sense of humor.
